Michael Phelps is young enough to be Dara Torres‘ son. In fact, he calls her mom. She could be the mom of many of the swimmers on the team.

But this post is about Michael Phelps. He’s in Beijing. He has his eyes on 8 gold medals…and perhaps World Records to go with some or all of them.

Can he do it? Why not? But, to be sure, nobody is going to give those gold medals to him. He’ll have to earn them.

All things considered, he is sure is goofy looking. That used to be said about Yogi Berra, too. Yogi replied. “You don’t hit a baseball with your face.” Nor, does Phelps swim that way, eh?

In just a couple of days, one of 1.3 billion people will light the fire to ignite the Beijing Olympic Games. Liu Xiang, the world record holder in the 110 meters hurdle and China’s first track and field gold medalist is high on the list of candidates. Problem is, Liu Xiang is still an active athlete and under extreme (is there a more intense word? If so, insert here and put x10 behind it) pressure to produce another gold medal for the home team. So…he might be home warming up, stretching or otherwise getting ready to win his event by 1/100th of a second or more if he can.

Other candidates include a victim of the recent earthquake. Yao Ming is a candidate. BOCOG can save money by making a shorter torch. And Yao could probably reach the cauldron without leaving the basketball arena.

Athletes have lit the fire in the past. Here’s a list -

Berlin 1936 – Fritz Schilgen – Athletics
London 1948 – John Mark – Athletics
Helsinki 1952 – Hannes Kolehmainen – Athletics
Melbourne 1956 – Ron Clarke – Athletics
Rome 1960 – Giancarlo Peris – Athletics
Tokyo 1964 – Yoshinori Sakaï – Schoolchild
Mexico City 1968 – Norma Enriqueta Basilio de Sotelo – Athletics
Munich 1972 – Günter Zahn – Athletics (junior)
Montreal 1976 РSandra Henderson and St̩phane Pr̩fontaine РAthletics (juniors)
Moscow 1980 – Sergei Belov – Basketball
Los Angeles 1984 – Rafer Johnson – Athletics
Seoul 1988 – Chung Sun-Man, Kim Won-Tak, Sohn Mi-Chung – Athletics
Barcelona 1992 – Antonio Rebollo – Archery
Atlanta 1996 – Muhammad Ali – Boxing
Sydney 2000 – Cathy Freeman – Athletics
Athens 2004 – Nikolaos Kaklamanakis – Sailing

Not sure who it will be, but my guess, it’ll be an athlete of some sort. Or maybe a panda.

Imagine 373 of them.

The Korea Times’s sister company, Hankook IIbo is organizing a 7km walk through the the Namsan Mountains. The cost is free and goodies are being given away. Middle and high school students get certificates of two hours of volunteer work.

Running, volunteering, free…and Miss Korea 2008. Sounds like fun.

Have you ever run a marathon?

This is great news for Chinese who didn’t get tickets to the Opening Ceremony. They will still know when their national flag is being paraded about the Bird’s nest because they will be able to see it waving above the top.

Yao Ming will carry the flag in for the Middle Kingdom as he did for China four years ago in Athens.

For the past six Summer Games, China has tapped a basketball star to carry the flag…and not because they are good looking or cute, mind you. Yao is case in point.

Wang Libin (1984),

Song Tao (1988),

Song Li (1992),

Liu Yudong (1996 and 2000) and

Yao Ming (2004).

The general idea is to choose the best or most unique to carry the flag.

Switzerland will ask Roger Federer holder of the No 1 ranking for 238 consecutive weeks.

America will ask Sudan-born Lopez Lomong to represent the Red, White and Blue. She will run the 1,500 meter.

Rebecca Romero

I’m looking forward to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. I love watching the athletes as excel as much as the next guy and girl. It seems, however, that some athletes love being watched more than the next guy and gal.

At least four Olympic athletes from the UK posed nude while doing the sport they will participate in at the Games. My bet, these guys and gals have no chance at a medal, so they try to make a, um, splash in a different way. Capitalize on their assets, that sort of thing.

Gregor Tait

In the U.S. their marketability would drop to zero on the grand scheme of things….depending on the market, I suppose. In the U.K., maybe there’s a different standard.

Phillips Idowu

One thing is for sure, on the fun meter…somebody will surely enjoy these pix. And that’s what it’s about…enjoying life, without hurting others.
