The origins of Chinese New Year

Submitted by Terya on Saturday, 31 July 20105 Comments

Chinese New Year is one of the most important national holidays in China / for Chinese people. It is also known as Spring Festival and it’s date is determined by the lunar calendar. For the year 2009, it will take place on January 26 & 27.

The festival is traditionally celebrated with many red lanterns, red spring rolls, red decorations, red everything. According to Chinese mythology, Chinese New Year meant the arrival of a mythical beast called Nian or “Year”. This beast would eat all livestock, crops and even villagers, especially children. The story goes that Nian is only afraid of the colour red, which is why you will see this everywhere.

During this time many Chinese will visit their families. They celebrate the start of the New Year with special food, a clean house, new clothes and lots of fireworks to ensure a blessed and prosperous year to come.
