The Chinese Casting Couch by Zhang Yu

Submitted by Bill Belew on Monday, 14 June 20102 Comments

An aspiring actress, Zhang Yu, has decided to expose the sordid side of the entertainment business in China.

She is blowing the whistle on China’s filmmakers – those who demand sex for choice roles in soaps and movies.

Zhang says she won her roles by sleeping with directors, assistant directors, or men in charge of casting….that seems like a long list to me.

When did she have time to learn acting?

She has released 20 graphic sex videos that she made herself and has namedzhang%20yu.jpg names.

However, instead of supporting her in a her claim, some have shifted the argument to what is acceptable material for the Web in China.

The 30 year old actress has rocked the industry – entertainment.

“We the Chinese women have suffered so much humiliation in the past, but nobody dares to talk about it,” Zhang said in an interview. “They are scoundrels, they don’t care, and they always say the same thing, ‘Zhang Yu, you don’t have a future if you do this.’ They all say the same thing. What does it mean? Even if you do that, we are not afraid. On the contrary, we can ruin you.”

Sex has always won favors in business, and not just in the entertainment industry.

I hope this young lady’s efforts affect some change.

Also, I wonder, does this sort of thing go on in Bollywood?

What do you think?

[...] Surely this sort of discrimination could be used to spark a public debate on ageism within our culture, using the entertainment industry as a springboard. What surprises me about this is the fact that the studios hiring based on age are escaping any sort of negative coverage. Surely there’s some good old-fashioned public outrage to be had at this truly horrendous activity. Maybe even a name and shame? Let’s crack this nut wide open, like the Chinese casting couch fiasco.
