Teenage Abortions on the Rise

Submitted by Bill Belew on Saturday, 27 September 2008No Comment

There are no official statistics on the number of abortions in Beijing each year but some insight can be gained from Beijing Tian’an Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the first in the capital to open a hotline for pregnant teenagers.

In the first three months – 100 teenage girls underwent abortions.

Of nearly 5,000 phone calls, 7-8% were from unmarried girls asking about abortions compared to five percent the year before.

More and more are in the 14-15 year old range…the youngest a mere 13-years old.

The number of abortions peak during the Spring Festival, May Day or National Day holidays and in the final term of the academic year.

One professor’s survey discovered that 4.6% of junior middle school students had sex, compared to 4.2% in senior high school.

Sex education has a low priority in school and parents shy away from the topic.

It seems, that the 1.3 billion people in the country have pretty much figured things out on their own…unfortunately, however at a much younger and younger age.

How old were you when you first had sex?
