Nine Million Pornographic Images

Submitted by Bill Belew on Friday, 30 July 2010No Comment

China’s Ministry of Public Security and nine other government agencies have launched a campaign to restrict the spread of pornography on the Net in China.

Beijing will crack down on:

1. distribution of pornographic materials

2. cyber strip shows

3. sexually-explicit images

4. sexually-explicit stories

5. Sexually-explicit audio

6. sexually-exlpicit videos

and while they are at it:

7. online lotteries

8. contraband trade

9. content that spreads rumors and is slanderous

The latest website to be busted contained nine million pornographic images and articles with 600,000 registered users. The website creator is serving a life sentence.

The Beijing Reformatory for Juvenile Delinquents says about one-third of its detainees are influenced by violent online games or erotic websites when they committed crimes like robbery and rape.

I still believe in freedom of expression but also in responsibility.

Just because it is permissible to do something doesn’t mean that something should be done. I am not a porn fan. But I am less a fan of having my freedom taken away.

Beijing’s motives may be right…but I also think that in the long run, they are futile.

What do you think?
