More than half of Chinese 132 million Internet users are boys hanging out in Internet cafes playing games, smoking and trying to access porn sites restricted by the Chinese government.

At least one of those boys has too much time on his hands.

Someone created an online calculator to decide how much a girlfriend is worth – as if these nerds hanging out all night in a smoke fog would even know what a girlfriend is.

19 items of personal information – height, weight, number of previous relationships, eating habits, gaming habits (of course) and so on, are used to determine the ‘worth’ of a girlfriend.

So far, the most valuable girlfriend topped at 2.500 yuan ($320). I saw a guy in Santana Row (an upscale shopping area in Silicon Valley) spend that much on dinner for his girl just the other night.

So, what does this game have to say, if anything, about the modern Chinese male’s attitude toward Chinese women?

I remember playing a similar game when I was in high school more than a quarter of a century ago….okay, much more than a quarter of a century ago.

It was stupid then for my friends and I to try to ‘value’ girls. It is even stupider now…even in China.
