China’s war against online porn

Submitted by Terya on Wednesday, 5 May 2010No Comment

In the latest attack on porn, approximately 1,250 websites have been shut down. Now that the Beijing Olypics are over, China sees no more reason to sustain the slightly less stringent control they usually exercise over media. The government warned some of China’s most popular sites – like Google, Baidu, Singa and Sohu – to do more against the availability of pornographic material through their sites.

The war against porn is part of a campaign to eradicate all “socially destabilizing” material. This also includes any criticism towards the Communist Party, any promoting of democracy in China and saying anything in favor of Taiwanese independence.

This year will also be the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests. It will be interesting to see how inventive the Chinese population will get to cover the news despite the current campaign…
