China has blocked access to 18,401 illegal Websites since April of this year in a nationwide campaign against pornography.

Some 9,593 were unregistered and 8,808 were closed of spreading porn, illicit or fraudulent pictures or info on the Internet.

The Ministry of Public Security in cooperation with nine other deparments made up the attack team.

sina.com, sohu.com, 163.com and qq.com also conducted self-clean ups and shut down problematic channels.

China’s number of Internet users is growing y about 8% each year…currently at about 162 million.illegal.website.jpg

It is estimated that there are about 500,000 Chinese-language pornographic websites compared to 2 million English porn sites.

Additionally, online fraud is growing in China.

Last month Shangdong police cracked China’s biggest online pyramid scam – 17,000 people and $180 million were involved.

Last month – the Ministry of Information Industry ordered Baidu, Google, Yahoo, Zhongsou, Sina and Sogou, to remove “illegal and unhealthy information” from their search results.

And if they don’t…the Ministry of Public Security will come do it for them.

Is this big brother activity good for China, for the Net or an exercise in futility?
