Hotels give discounts, restaurants and flower markets bloom.
Couples use the day to get married.
In the 80s Valentine’s Day was translated Lover’s Day, even Mistress’ Day.
No more. Now it’s money day.
The days of the Chinese not showing public affection, their wealth even, are long gone.
Ads abound any more of single men with big apartments, expensive cars, overseas education now advertise for the perfect wife.
Even, private detectives find business good when wives hire them to track their husbands this time of the year.
The Edison Chen, Gillian Chung fiasco is evidence of the new Chinese attitude toward sexuality and displaying a lot more than public affection.

Like it or not, the Middle Kingdom has to make use of this American ‘festival.’ To be sure, businesses throughout the country are happy to make money any way they can.
