Once upon a time there was a very strange looking, very scary looking, eel-like shark that lived in the depths of the ocean. Many people have never heard of this creature, let alone seen one.

Until now.

Seeing is said to be believing. But the frilled shark looks so much like its extinct relatives, it has been dubbed a living fossil. The biggest of its kind is only about 2 meter long, but the 25 rows of 300 teeth combined with its unusual gills make the shark a chilling sight nonetheless.

No worries, there’s small chance you’ll meet one of these on a surfing trip. They are mostly found in the waters of Japan, but at a depth of 600 – 1000 meters (2000 – 3000 feet).
